Music in “The Other Bennet Sister” on BBC

Comments Off on Music in “The Other Bennet Sister” on BBC

We have been enjoying the recent series “The Other Bennet Sister” on BBC. In the first 5 episodes much of the dance music seems to be inspired by our recordings of Regency and Georgian dances.

Episode 1
– The first tune is The Strolling Players from William Randall’s 24 Country Dances for 1771 (Georgian Occupations album)

– The second tune is Newcastle from Playford 1701 (We haven’t recorded this but several recordings are available as it is a well known Playford era dance)

– The third tune is Bonaparte in a Knapsack from Thompson’s 24 Country Dances for 1804 (Grand Waterloo Ball album)

– The fourth tune is The De’il amang the Taylors from various collections including Martin Platt’s Book 25 for the year 1798 (Queen Charlotte’s Birthday Balls album). Looks like they are dancing part of The Eightsome Reel, as the Scots do, to this tune!

– The fifth tune is The Mole Catcher from Thompson’s Compleat Collection of 200 Favorite Country Dances Vol 2 1758-1765 (Georgian Occupations album)

Episode 3
During the houseparty scene they use The Post Coach from Thompson’s 24 Country Dances for 1767. This dance tune was also one of the dances on our Georgian Occupations album recorded last year.

Episode 5
Lady Nelson’s Waltz from Cahusac’s Annual Collection of 24 Country Dances 1800. This is the tune for the dance Lady Nelson’s waltz cotillion, which was written by our friend Ellis Rogers and which we included on our Grand Waterloo Ball album. They seem to be doing part of his choreography in the episode.

Whitehall Minuet – from Playford 1701

Daphne or The Shepherdess from Playford 1651

Bohemian Waltz from Thomas Wilson’s Companion to the Ballroom 1816. Our version of this dance is on our Love and Friendship album

Le Vertigo – from Robert Bride’s Favorite Collection of 200 Country Dances 1775. Our version is also on our Love and Friendship album
